Autism awareness.
2020 presented many challenges, for Leo it also created an opportunity for him to learn to ride his bike safely in the community. In February 2020 Leo first removed his training wheels, then the endless lockdowns gave him the chance to practise every day. At first learning to listen to my instructions, use his brakes, cross the roads and navigate the many walkers and their dogs at the river all required lots and lots of practise. Now 12 months on, we are so proud of what Leo has achieved - he completes his rides confidently and safely every time. Leo has made lots of friends along the way too, with many locals congratulating him on his progress and success. We are taking part in this challenge to acknowledge and celebrate Leo's success. Bike riding with your children is something most families take granted, Leo has had to work really hard to achieve this - a few years ago I wouldn't have dared to dream he could be where he is today!
I’m riding for autism to help create a world where no-one on the autism spectrum is left behind.
I've set my challenge and I'll be riding from Sunday 4 - 11 July while raising much needed funds to support people on the autism spectrum.
An estimated 1 in every 70 people is on the spectrum. Along with their family members, this means autism is a part of daily life for over a million Australians.
People on the spectrum see, hear, feel and experience the world differently. For many, simply coping with the everyday can lead to confusion, anxiety and isolation.
By coming together and taking action, we can help provide opportunities for people on the autism spectrum to participate, engage and thrive in the world around them.
